Cooking with gas

It was as early as 1802 when gas was first used for the purposes of cooking. Moravian chemical manufacturer, Zachaus Winzler, prepared food for dinner parties using a gas cooker that included four burners and a small oven. However, it was in 1834 that the first gas cookers were produced commercially – by a man called James Sharp. The Earl Spencer was his patron in this endeavour and soon the ovens became a regular household feature. When the gas oven thermostat was introduced in 1923, followed by enamelled cookers in 1928, gas cookers became far more popular. There are now over ten million people using gas cookers in the United Kingdom
